Frequently answered

Byter is a macOS app that helps you understand your data usage, internet speed, and network history.

Byter is free to download and use, with no ads. If it’s useful to you, you can support its development and help keep it free for everyone.

No. There’s no sign-up. Just install Byter and it starts measuring your usage right away.

Only how much data passes through your network connections, plus the network name, so usage can be grouped. It never sees the websites you visit or the content you send.

Byter currently runs on macOS, on Macs with Apple silicon (M1 and later). A Windows version is on the way.

If macOS blocks the app, open System Settings → Privacy & Security and click “Open Anyway”. If that option doesn’t appear (a known issue we’re fixing), open Terminal and run:

sudo xattr -rw com.apple.quarantine "0083;00000000;;" /Applications/Byter.app

You’ll be asked for your Mac password. Or get Byter from the App Store instead.
